VIII. Immigration Law

Except in the province of Quebec, where jurisdiction is shared with the federal government, immigration is a federal jurisdiction and the provinces provide only a consulting role to the federal government.

Canada’s immigration policy is governed by the federal Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.

The following discussion highlights key issues and requirements for work permits under the Act. For a discussion of these issues and requirements as they pertain to the province of Quebec, please refer to Blakes Doing Business in Quebec Guide.
