OVERVIEW & EXPERTISE

"For its numbers, clients and caseload, rivals freely admit that Blake, Cassels & Graydon houses the top competition practice in Canada."

Global Competition Review's GCR 100

Competition law is undergoing rapid changes. In Canada, the Competition Bureau is aggressively deploying its investigative and enforcement powers and is displaying a renewed readiness to litigate. As a result, both Canadian and global entities are finding merger reviews more onerous, competitive activities more closely scrutinized, and compliance programs and counselling more important than ever before.

Widely acknowledged as the leading competition and foreign investment review practice in Canada, the Blakes Competition, Antitrust & Foreign Investment group works closely with clients to secure approvals for their transactions and facilitate their strategic objectives in compliance with the Competition Act and Investment Canada Act. Our clients regard us as a trusted partner and adviser. We draw on our extensive knowledge of our clients’ businesses to provide practical and timely advice.

Blakes is frequently retained by major domestic and international companies and by international and domestic law firms for all manner of competition and foreign investment representation and advice, including in merger matters before the Competition Bureau and Competition Tribunal, securing approvals for investments by non-Canadian firms under the Investment Canada Act, cartel investigations, abuse of dominance matters, distribution practices and advertising matters.

Blakes has a proven track record of success in acting for clients on multinational transactions and investigations involving co-ordination among counsel and agencies in the United States, Europe and other jurisdictions. We understand how competition laws fit within the broader context of complex corporate transactions and business affairs generally. We also draw on leading expertise in related practice areas across the Firm, such as mergers and acquisitions, securities, tax, litigation, employment, information technology, trade and intellectual property in transactional matters. Our experience and proven expertise allow us to provide clients with the timely, practical and strategic advice necessary to ensure compliance with competition laws while facilitating their transactions and assisting them in realizing their business objectives.
