OVERVIEW & EXPERTISE

When engaging in any form of project development or business that can potentially impact the environment, it becomes necessary to consider the assessments and approvals processes that often result in delays, additional costs and plan alterations. Blakes environmental lawyers advise clients in all types of major undertakings with potential impact on the environment, including hydroelectric, mining, waste-management facilities, oil and gas, electricity, nuclear power and infrastructure projects.

Clients across industries rely on us for advice on environmental assessments and approvals processes and assistance with minimizing the potential impact on their projects. We employ effective strategies to reduce approvals time-frames and compliance costs, and increase community acceptance. Our lawyers are well versed in the details and applicability of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act and regularly represent clients before the Department of the Environment and the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency. Our knowledge of existing regulations, anticipated requirements and compliance costs helps us guide clients in determining project time-frames, appropriate financing, construction costs and insurance coverage.

Our goal is to assist clients in promoting project sustainability while assuring their compliance with all applicable environmental requirements and regulations. Addressing federal and provisional assessment, approvals and permitting requirements, we have counselled clients on many types of projects taking place on government lands, involving significant government funding or carried out on behalf of public authorities.

Clients engage Blakes because of our comprehensive knowledge of the regulatory framework, solid working relationships with regulators and ability to keep projects on track.
