Michael has served as Practice Group Leader of the Blakes Toronto Capital Markets practice since 2013. His practice focuses on international inbound as well as domestic merger and acquisition transactions.

Michael has advised on many of Canada's highest-profile M&A transactions, including Suncor/PetroCan, BHP Billiton/Potash and CNOOC/Nexen, as well as numerous middle-market transactions. He acts for offerors and targets on public negotiated and unsolicited domestic and cross-border acquisition transactions, as well as purchasers and vendors in connection with asset and share purchase transactions. He also frequently acts for financial sponsors in both platform and roll-up transactions.

  • Leading the Blakes team advising Lavazza S.p.A. on its acquisition of Kicking Horse Coffee Co. Ltd.

  • Leading the Blakes team advising DigitalGlobe, Inc. in connection with its US$3-billion acquisition by MacDonald Dettwiler & Associates

  • Advising the Special Committee of Sirius XM Canada in connection with its going private transaction

  • Advising the Special Committee of Amaya in connection with its evaluation of an announced insider transaction and subsequent strategic review process

  • Advising OptumRx, a subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group, in connection with its US$12.8-billion acquisition of Catamaran Corp.

  • Advising the Board of Directors of Talisman Energy on its US$13-billion acquisition by Repsol S.A.

  • Leading the Blakes team advising H&R REIT on its C$2.75-billion acquisition of Primaris Retail REIT and concurrent sale of a portfolio of 18 Primaris properties to a consortium led by KingSett Capital for C$1.28-billion

  • Leading the Blakes team advising Audax Capital in connection with its acquisition of Altasciences Company

  • Advising the management of Sandvine Corporation on its acquisition by Procera Networks, Inc.

  • Advising the Executive Chairman of Halogen Software Inc. in connection with the pending MBO/LBO of Halogen Software and combination with Saba Software, Inc.

  • Leading the Blakes team advising CIVC Partners in connection with its acquisition of Lendcare Capital

  • Leading the Blakes team advising Atkins Nutritionals in connection with its acquisition of Wellness Foods

  • Leading the Blakes team advising KSL Capital in connection with its acquisition of 24 per cent of Whistler-Blackcomb Holdings and subsequent sale of Whistler-Blackcomb to Vail Resorts
