Thomas practises in all areas of intellectual property, with a focus on patents and business transactions involving technology. He is a lawyer, patent agent and trade-mark agent.

Thomas regularly drafts and prosecutes patent applications for electrical, computer/software and mechanical inventions. He advises clients on a wide range of business transactions, including the sale, purchase and license of worldwide intellectual property assets. He also has an active trade-mark practice managing trade-mark portfolios in a variety of industries.

Prior to practising law, Thomas worked for over five years at a leading semiconductor company designing reconfigurable integrated circuits and developing related software. He is the co-inventor of several issued patents on distributed memory and power management in integrated circuits. He is also a licensed professional engineer.

Representative transactional matters for which Thomas has advised on intellectual property aspects include:

  • Johnson Electric Holdings Limited on its C$800-million acquisition of Stackpole International
  • Agrium Inc. on its C$85-million sale of its turf and ornamental business to Koch Agronomic Services, LLC
  • Ericsson Canada in connection with its acquisition of BelAir Networks Inc.
  • RBC Capital Markets, as agent, in connection with a C$155-million credit facility in favour of MOSAID Technologies Incorporated
  • Altera Corporation on its acquisition of Avalon Microelectronics Inc.
