Rahat has a diverse practice that includes complex commercial litigation and arbitrations, class actions and constitutional litigation. She has acted for clients in a number of industries, including telecommunications, natural resources, mining, banking, power, financial services, and manufacturers of food, drugs and consumer products. Rahat has represented these clients in wide-ranging disputes, including contract cases, negligence actions, securities-related litigation, class actions, injunctions and complex summary judgment and jurisdiction motions.

Rahat has appeared as counsel at all levels of court, including the Supreme Court of Canada, the Federal Court of Canada, the Ontario Court of Appeal and the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal. She has also appeared before various administrative tribunals and worked on matters before the Ontario Securities Commission and the Financial Services Tribunal.

Rahat has extensive commercial arbitration experience that includes both international and domestic institutional and ad hoc arbitrations. She has represented clients before sole arbitrators as well three-member tribunals and is well-versed in the arbitration process and rules, including rules of the International Chamber of Commerce and the American Arbitration Association's International Centre for Dispute Resolution.


The arbitrations Rahat has acted on are strictly confidential but include representing leading national and international companies on multi-million dollar complex commercial disputes. Some recent cases on public record where Rahat has acted include:

  • Counsel to Bell Canada in the appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada regarding the disposition of funds in the deferral accounts established by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission
  • Counsel to Bank of Nova Scotia in a C$3.5-million dispute involving contract, tort and conversion claims

  • Counsel to Cliffs Natural Resources in a wide range of contractual disputes, including a C$1.8-billion joint venture dispute involving the Wabush Mine in Labrador
  • Counsel to RR Donnelly in a complex multi-party dispute involving printing and insertion services

  • Counsel to Nestlé Canada Inc. in a proposed national class action involving pet food
  • Counsel to the Insurance Bureau of Canada in constitutional challenges in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick brought by individuals seeking to have declared unconstitutional provincial legislation limiting claims for pain and suffering for minor injuries
  • Counsel to Canadian Civil Liberties Association in appeals to the Ontario Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada involving the intersection of right to freedom of religion and fair trial rights
  • Counsel to Mueller Co. in a C$10-million environmental assessment and remediation dispute involving the lease of a large industrial site in Milton, Ontario
  • Counsel to Sealed Air Corporation in a complex environmental dispute involving migration of contaminants between neighboring commercial properties

  • Member of the team of counsel for Merck & Co. and Merck Frosst with respect to the Vioxx class actions
