John advises primarily on corporate finance matters and mergers and acquisitions. He has acted on a wide range of financings of private and public companies (with a focus on private equity and capital markets transactions), and acquisitions and dispositions involving energy and power companies, as well as retail and industrial businesses. He also acts on a variety of commercial matters, including joint venture transactions.

John's clients include energy companies, investment dealers, banks and private lenders and funds.

  • Canada Pension Plan Investment Board on its C$204-million preferred share financing of Teine Energy Ltd.

  • Canada Pension Plan Investment Board on its purchase of C$150-million senior secured notes of Laricina Energy Ltd.

  • RBC Capital Markets in the listing of Caracal Energy Inc. on the premium segment of the London Stock Exchange and subsequent base shelf prospectus/UK prospectus offering.

  • The underwriters in various Canadian high yield note issuances including the issuances by Savanna Energy Services Corp. of its C$125-million aggregate principal amount high yield notes and North American Energy Partners of its C$225-million aggregate principal amount high yield notes.

Mergers and Acquisitions

  • Novus Energy Inc. in its acquisition by Yanchang Petroleum International Limited, a state-owned Chinese energy company.

  • Nexen Inc. in its acquisition by CNOOC Limited.

  • China CAMC Engineering Hongkong Co., a subsidiary of Sinomach, in its acquisition of a majority interest in Canadian Procon Holdings (Alberta) Inc., a private Canadian mining services company.

  • A Canadian pension fund in its acquisition of a minority interest in a US private E&P company.

  • Macquarie in its acquisition of Calgary-based energy investment bank Tristone Capital.
