Ilia's practice covers various aspects of civil and commercial law, with a particular focus on bankruptcy and insolvency, as well as commercial litigation and extraordinary proceedings. He advises national and foreign clients, including manufacturers, banks, trustees, debtors, monitors, receivers, debtor-in-possession lenders, lessors and local businesses.

Before joining Blakes, Ilia worked as a research assistant to Professor Geneviève Parent in international food-processing norms and regulations and Professor Georges Azzaria in international copyright law.

Prior to his legal studies, Ilia worked in a molecular mycology research laboratory. He also co-authored several publications on this subject, which appeared in high-impact peer-reviewed journals.

He is fluent in English, French and Russian.

SELECT EXPERIENCE

  • Acted on behalf of Bloom Lake General Partner Limited and various affiliates in their insolvency proceedings under the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA) in respect of the closures of two of the largest iron ore mines in Canada
  • Acted for a franchisor of several restaurant chains, successfully obtaining an approval of a sale of assets and of assignment of various agreements in the context of a Notice of Intention to Make a Proposal under the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act (BIA)

  • Acted on behalf of the monitor in the restructuring of 3499481 Canada Inc., doing business under the names of PJ's Pets, Pets Unlimited Inc., Oliver Pets & Co. and Petculture
  • Acted on behalf of a major construction equipment lessor in the realization of securities
  • Defended the interests of a licence holder in the context of CCAA proceedings of the licensor (gaming industry)
  • Defended the interests of a licence holder in the context of voluntary liquidation of the licensor (biomedical industry)
  • Acted for one of North America's largest clothing manufacturers and retailers, seeking the issuance of an order appointing an interim receiver under the BIA
