Raj Bhala

Raj is an International Legal Consultant working on all matters relating to international trade law and Islamic law (Shari'a).

In international trade law, Raj works on the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) and other World Trade Organization (WTO) agreements, including the interpretation and application of GATT-WTO texts by the WTO Appellate Body. He handles existing and proposed new free trade agreements and customs unions, in the Middle East, on the Indian Subcontinent and worldwide. He deals with trade remedies, export controls, trade sanctions, customs rules and procedures, and trade facilitation. His work covers foreign direct investment (FDI) law, efforts to reform laws and regulations, and establishing and enhancing educational and training programs.

Regarding Islamic law, Raj focuses on the intersection of Shari'a principles with international business obligations and norms. He reviews matters concerning the participation of countries influenced by Islamic law in international trade and FDI agreements, and also the development and application of Islamic finance regimes and structures.

Raj previously practised international banking law with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and has counselled prominent international organizations and multinational corporations, as well as the U.S. and foreign governments.

AWARDS & RECOGNITION

Raj has received the following awards from the University of Kansas:

  • Kemper Award for teaching excellence
  • Woodyard Award for outstanding leadership in international education
  • Moreau Award (twice) for dedicated service in mentoring and advising students

At the New York Federal Reserve, Raj twice won the President's Award for Excellence for his work on wire transfers as a United States delegate to the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) and on Article 4A of the Uniform Commercial Code.
