Ian is a commercial litigator with a focus on dispute resolution in the transportation and energy sectors. He has acted as counsel in cargo, casualty, construction and contract issues relating to all modes of transportation, and has advised on transactions involving the sale of ships and maritime transportation. Ian has also represented energy, oilfield services and pipeline companies in commercial and construction-related disputes, including insolvency matters.

Prior to joining Blakes, Ian practised at a major regional firm in Atlantic Canada, where he gained extensive experience in maritime law and commercial litigation, including as a protection and indemnity club correspondent. Prior to becoming an Associate, he clerked at the Federal Court of Canada.

In addition to his transportation and energy law practice, Ian has experience in a variety of areas and industries, including banking, insolvency, administrative and aboriginal law.

Ian has acted as counsel in matters before all levels of the Alberta, Nova Scotia and federal courts.

SELECT EXPERIENCE

Recent matters in which Ian has been involved include:

  • Acting as co-counsel for industry proponents in the Clyde River v. Attorney General of Canada Supreme Court of Canada appeal

  • Acting as counsel for a major petroleum producer and shipper in judicial review proceedings

  • Acting as counsel in defending a claim regarding the design and construction of an offshore natural gas platform

  • Advising on the M&A transaction involving McKeil Marine's sale to TorQuest

  • Acting as trial counsel for a chartered bank in successfully defending a claim for investment losses resulting from the fraud of a third-party company

  • Representing developers and landowners before municipal councils and in litigation with municipalities and the Government of Alberta

  • Acting for applicants and respondents in applications for judicial review from a number of provincial and federal decision-makers

  • Acting as counsel for a major beer producer in a dispute with a distributor
