Supporting thriving and caring communities is important to Blakes. It begins with respect and care for those who work at the Firm. Blakes lawyers and staff support over 150 charitable organizations, community agencies and volunteer boards through donations of time and money.

United Way

Through our partnership with United Way across Canada, Blakes is helping to create positive social change and have an impact in neighbourhoods where we live and work. Each year, our offices across Canada support their local regions through participation in United Way activities. For the past six years (2010-2015), Blakes has been honoured with the distinguished Thanks A Million Award for raising more than C$1-million for United Way Centraide Canada, acknowledging our commitment as a philanthropic leader among Canadian companies. These donations will provide vital stability to frontline United Way agencies, helping them to assist thousands of lives in communities where we do business.

CIBC Run for the Cure

The Firm participates annually in the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure. Through generous donations and participation by Firm members in various fundraising events, including the run itself, we had another successful fundraising campaign in 2014, raising over C$13,500 nationwide.

Terry Fox Run

Each year, Blakes participates in the Terry Fox Run to help raise funds and awareness for cancer research. In 2014, Blakes raised over C$29,000 nationally. Also known as the Marathon of Hope, the Run began in 1980 with the simple objective of informing Canadians of the importance of finding a cure for cancer. Terry Fox’s inspiring message “I want to try the impossible to show that it can be done” is one that Blakes is certainly proud to share.

Ronald McDonald House

Blakes is a proud supporter of Ronald McDonald House (RMH) in Southern Alberta and Toronto. RMH seeks to provide a home away from home for seriously ill children and their families to heal better together. RMH Southern Alberta has two houses and is the only house in Canada with an RMH Care Mobile, which provides mobile dental and health clinics in Calgary communities. RMH Toronto recently built a new house with 96 rooms for families. It is the largest RMH in the world, and Blakes has adopted one of their rooms. Blakes lawyers also serve on boards and committees, participate in various activities, such as hosting “Home for Dinner” for families staying at the house, and regularly provide pro bono services.

Raise-a-Reader

Since 2009, Blakes has donated C$15,000 annually to the Raise-a-Reader campaign. Blakes lawyers and staff also volunteer to sell papers in downtown Vancouver in exchange for donations. The Raise-a-Reader campaign exists to empower today’s children and families with tools to improve their reading skills. These skills are the foundation for lifelong learning that significantly affects the quality of life and the health and social economic well-being of individuals, families and communities.

Daily Bread Food Bank

For the past 10 years, Blakes has been spearheading the Daily Bread Food Bank Law Firm Challenge to support Daily Bread's annual Holiday Food Drive. In 2014, 39 firms participated, raising close to C$200,000 in cash and food donations. Blakes was once again in first place overall, having raised over C$30,000. The Daily Bread Law Firm Challenge has raised more than C$2-million since it began.

Children’s Museum of Manhattan

Blakes is a long-time corporate member and proud supporter of the Children’s Museum of Manhattan (CMOM). The mission of CMOM is to inspire children and their families to learn about themselves and the culturally diverse world in which they live, through a unique environment of interactive exhibitions and programs. Each year, CMOM serves more than 35,000 children from at-risk communities through outreach programs offered at nearly 50 sites throughout New York City. Blakes lawyers serve on the board of directors and event committees, and together with Blakes staff, have supported “Team CMOM” annually in the New York City marathon, which funds CMOM's Memorial Sloan Kettering Arts Outreach Program serving children and families in cancer care.

Kinette Club of Calgary Adopt-a-Family

For many years, Blakes has contributed to the Adopt-a-Family program, which provides low-income families in Calgary with a holiday hamper full of gifts, personally selected for each family member, and grocery gift cards to bring cheer in the midst of a difficult season. For many children in the program, the donated gifts are the only holiday gifts they will receive that year. Families in the program have been referred to the Kinette Club of Calgary by counsellors working in recognized social service agencies.

Family Services of Greater Vancouver

Since 2004, Blakes has supported Family Services of Greater Vancouver's Stopping the Violence program. The program provides counselling for women who have experienced abuse and empowers them to improve the lives of their children in order to break the cycle.

Other fundraising campaigns we support include:

  • The Arthritis Society (Ontario Division) – Blakes is a long-time sponsor of the All-In for Arthritis Poker Gala and Rock the Joint events, which help raise funds for ground-breaking work in diagnosis, treatment and the search for a cure.

  • Calgary Drop-In and Rehab Centre – Blakes lawyers and students volunteer at the Calgary Drop-In and Rehab Centre, which seeks to ensure the needs of people who are homeless and at risk are met in a respectful, comprehensive and safe way. In recent years, Blakes has provided financial support by purchasing gift cards to help clients of the Drop-In Centre outfit themselves with work boots and other work wear in order to be able to obtain paid employment.
  • Pro Bono Going Public – Blakes lawyers provide free legal advice in the streets of Vancouver to raise awareness and funds for the pro bono programs.
