Richard Bell is a Partner in the Litigation Group. Rich earned his law degree from the University of Toronto in 1997, as well as graduate and undergraduate degrees from the University of Oxford (where he was a Commonwealth Scholar) and the University of Saskatchewan.

Prior to beginning his articles at Blakes, Rich also served as law clerk to the Honourable Madam Justice C. D. Hunt of the Alberta Court of Appeal and the Honourable Mr. Justice T. F. McMahon of the Alberta Court of Queen's Bench.

With over 12 years of litigation experience, Rich has appeared before all levels of courts in Alberta, as well as the Federal Court of Canada and the Tax Court of Canada. He has been involved in several high-profile litigation cases that have received significant media attention from both the local and national press and television.

Selected recent litigation experience includes the following:

  • Successfully defending a claim over ownership and alleged unitization of a natural gas well at trial for Dominion Exploration Canada Ltd.
  • Ongoing prosecution and defence of multiple claims for a privately owned oil and gas company regarding a natural gas well blow-out and resulting fire
  • The ongoing defence of a major oil and gas producer against a C$110-million claim for alleged breach of contract and expropriation of business
  • Ongoing representation of a major oil and gas producer in a commercial arbitration regarding the allocation of capacities at a jointly owned processing facility
  • Ongoing defence and prosecution of multiple claims regarding alleged cost overruns and billing disputes with respect to the construction of an oil sands water treatment facility near Fort McMurray, Alberta
  • Successful prosecution of an injunction to restrain the defendants from utilizing the trade secrets and confidential information of a manufacturer of specialized electromagnetic, downhole measurement-while-drilling technology
  • The ongoing prosecution of a claim regarding alleged trade-mark infringement in Alberta for a U.S.-based manufacturer and supplier
  • Successfully defending challenges to the powers of the Alberta Auditor General, confirming his authority to conduct an audit of the Alberta Securities Commission
  • Successful prosecution of a claim by a disabled individual for maintenance and support from a family estate under the Dependants Relief Act
  • Successfully representing corporations and individuals in appeals of corporate and personal income tax assessments in the Alberta Court of Queen's Bench and the Tax Court of Canada
