Profile
Ryder Gilliland is a litigation Partner. He has a wide-ranging litigation practice involving defamation, constitutional, securities, competition, tax, class-action and general corporate-commercial litigation.
Ryder has appeared as counsel at all levels of courts in Ontario, as well as in the Federal Court of Canada and the Supreme Court of Canada.
In the area of defamation law, Ryder has acted for some of the largest newspapers and broadcasters in Canada and the United States, and regularly provides prepublication advice to media organizations and publishers on legal issues relating to copyright, defamation, freedom of information, publication bans and issues specific to Internet publication. He also advises and acts for corporations dealing with reputation management issues.
Ryder speaks Spanish fluently, and has assisted Latin American clients seeking legal remedies in Canada. He has also obtained orders to obtain evidence in Latin America (Chile) and has attended in that jurisdiction to take foreign evidence.
Ryder speaks at conferences, writes regularly, and holds memberships with the Canadian Bar Association, The Advocates' Society and Ad Idem (Advocates in Defence of Free Expression). He is also an executive member of the Civil Litigation Section of the Ontario Bar Association.
