The Summer Student Experience:
- Upon arrival at Blakes in early to mid May, students attend an orientation session that introduces them to the firm and its resources.
- Second year summer students do not work in rotations. Instead they have an opportunity to work in all practice areas during their summer at the firm. The major areas of practice in the Ottawa office are:
- Each student is assigned a mentor. The mentor's role is to ensure that students receive interesting and varied assignments from all the lawyers in the office.
- We also provide in-house seminars to provide exposure to various areas of practice. This focuses on exposing students to different practice areas and helps them develop substantive skills.
- We review our summer students twice during the course of the summer. Our goal in our evaluation system is to help each student develop his or her skills as lawyers in training.
- Social events are held over the course of the summer to ensure that students get to know one another as well as lawyers at the firm. This may include casual deck parties to an organized summer event, such as a riverboat cruise or dinner.
- We believe that the size of our office in Ottawa, our relative youth and the characteristics that we look for in our students and lawyers make our office a friendly, as well as exciting, place to practice law.

The "Nuts & Bolts" of Summering
- Summer positions commence in early- to mid-May and end at the end of August. Although there is no set start date, it is easier for our training schedule if the summer students start at the same time.
- We can normally accommodate any planned vacations, but require this information prior to the summer commencing.
- We pay a salary and benefits comparable to the highest paid students at Ottawa firms.

Applications and Interviews:
- For the 2009 summer term, we plan to hire one (1) second year summer student. We are looking for summer students who are interested in also articling in Ottawa. Although an articling job in not guaranteed, we have found that we often extend articling offers to our summer students.
- The deadline for applications is February 2, 2009. We will accept late applications but cannot guarantee they will be considered.
- We plan to conduct interviews at our office during the period of February 13, 2008 to February 27, 2009.
- References in Blakes @ Your School for other universities refer to interviews being conducted by our other Blakes offices and not by our office.
