First Year Summer Student Program
You will find that the program we offer first year summer students is distinct from programs
offered by other firms:
- First year summer students are not simply assimilated into our second year summer program.
- Over the course of the summer, a first year summer student will do three rotations:
Corporate/securities, litigation and one in a speciality area such as: intellectual property, real estate, restructuring and insolvency, or pensions and employee benefits. For information about the kind of experience in each of these areas, click here.
- In each rotation, the first year student will be assigned a mentor who will be involved in the training of the student and receive interesting and varied assignments.
- We have introduced a business law-training program because first year summer students have not had the chance to take any business law courses during their first year of law school. To see our summer education program for first year students, click here.
- First year summer students are reviewed at the end of each rotation.
- At the end of the summer, first year summer students will learn if they will be hired back as second year summer students. This past year, all of our first year summer students were offered positions.
- Our recruitment of first year students is governed by Law Society regulations. We interview a select group of candidates as we usually only hire a small number of first year students.
Social events are held over the course of the summer to ensure that students get to know one another as well as lawyers at the firm. Summer social events have included: a student/mentor dinner, a student/mentor softball tournament, a go-carting event, a day lending a helping hand with "Habitat for Humanity", a pub night, an Art Tour at the Firm, a dinner at the home of a partner, a soccer game at BMO stadium and a tour of a Niagara winery.
