Second Year Summer Student Program

Second year summer students have the choice of working within one or two practice areas during their summer at the firm. If a student wants to do two rotations, we would schedule the rotations as follows: the first rotation would be from May to June and the second rotation would be from July to August.

The practice areas in which you can do a rotation include:

  • Blakes will also consider requests from students to spend part of their summer with another organization through a program sponsored by their law school or with a law firm in a foreign jurisdiction. We will also consider requests to spend part of the summer in one of our other offices in Canada.

  • In each rotation, students are assigned a mentor. The mentor's role is to ensure that students receive interesting and varied assignments. During their rotation, the students will work with their mentor, as well as with other lawyers in the practice group.

  • There are also regularly scheduled group meetings with articling students to discuss development in the firm and to receive feedback from the students on matters which concern them.

  • Upon arrival at Blakes in early May, students attend an orientation session that introduces them to the firm and its resources.

  • We also provide a comprehensive educational program. This focuses on exposing students to different practice areas and helps them develop substantive skills.

  • We review our summer students twice during the course of the summer. Our goal in our evaluation system is to help each student develop their skills as lawyers in training.

  • Social events are held over the course of the summer to ensure that students get to know one another as well as lawyers at the firm. Summer social events have included: a student/mentor dinner, a student/mentor softball tournament, a go-carting event, a day lending a helping hand with "Habitat for Humanity", a pub night, an Art Tour at the Firm, a dinner at the home of a partner, a soccer game at BMO stadium and a tour of a Niagara winery.

  • The application and interview process for second year summer students is governed by Law Society rules. We conduct on-campus interviews across Canada in early October. Please click Blakes at Your School to see when we will be at your school. For advice on the application and interview process, please refer to the menu.
