James Papadimitriou is a Partner whose practice focuses primarily on commercial law, with a particular emphasis on financial services, real estate, acquisitions and general commercial law. He is also the Montréal office regional co-ordinator of the Financial Services and Real Estate Groups.

In The Best Lawyers in Canada 2010, James was voted by peers as one of the leading lawyers in Canada in asset-based lending, as well as equipment finance law. He has been identified as a prominent practitioner in the corporate real estate field in the PLC Cross-border Corporate Real Estate Handbook 2009/10 and is also highly rated by the Martindale-Hubbell survey of Canadian legal practitioners.

In addition to practising in two other major Montréal law firms, James previously practised as in-house counsel with a major international transportation company.

James is also recognized in Chambers Global: The World's Leading Lawyers for Business 2010 as a "very efficient lawyer and a rising star" and is a "solid choice for acquisitions, developments and project financing".

James's work experience includes representing various parties in cases of mergers and acquisitions, real estate acquisitions and developments, guaranteed, syndicated and commercial lending operations, real estate and project financing, and commercial leasing. In his practice, he has participated in a large number of transactions, including:

  • syndicated loans
  • asset-based lending transactions
  • financing and refinancing of real estate, project and equipment finance
  • ship financing
  • securitizations
  • workouts
  • purchase and sale of shares and assets
  • shareholder agreements and joint venture contracts
  • corporate reorganizations
  • real estate acquisition, development and lending
  • commercial leases
Recent financing transactions include providing advice on securitizations involving trade and credit card receivables, real estate mortgages, equipment and resort points, as well as loan transactions involving a regional shopping centre, conversion of ships and ship construction, mobile phone service providers, a Canadian airline, a radio station operator, a retail sports equipment chain and a furniture manufacturer, as well as acquisition financings involving a food processing concern, forestry assets, a transportation equipment manufacturer and a truck transportation company. Asset-based lending transactions include acting for lenders in the manufacturing, clothing and retail industries.

Recent acquisition transactions include businesses in the food manufacturing, property maintenance, telecommunications, transportation and direct marketing database industries. Recent real estate acquisition and disposition work includes regional shopping centres, multi-residential properties, sale-leaseback of industrial properties, power centres and office buildings, as well as negotiating joint venture and co-ownership structures. James also regularly acts for Canadian chartered banks and other retail operators on commercial leasing matters, as well as on behalf of landlords on leasing matters.

James is a member of the Canadian Bar Association and the American Bar Association. He is also former co-president of the Montréal Bar Association's Liaison Committee with the Register of Personal and Movable Real Rights. He is a member of the Canadian Finance and Leasing Association, the Urban Development Institute, and the International Council of Shopping Centres.
