Sean Zhang practises in the Intellectual Property Group. He is a lawyer and also a patent agent registered to practice before the Canadian Patent Office and the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Sean's practice is focused on advising clients on development and enforcement of intellectual property protection of technology, including preparation of patent applications, prosecution of patent applications before patent offices in various countries, obtaining and enforcing patents, opinion work regarding patentability infringement and validity, and all aspects of the clearance, acquisition, enforcement and exploitation of patents, trade-marks, copyright, and industrial designs. He has drafted and prosecuted patent applications for clients in electrical, mechanical and software fields. His clients include Canadian and U.S. companies in computer software, image processing, optics, telecommunications and networks, automotive parts, and consumer products manufacturing industries, among others, and companies in other countries in various industries.

Sean advises clients on licensing of intellectual property, developing IP portfolios, as well as legal matters relating to information technology, Internet law and electronic commerce. His practice also involves advising clients regularly on intellectual property aspects of corporate-commercial transactions and technology contracting.

Sean is also a member of the Firm's China Practice Group, assisting North American-based clients in doing business in China, and Chinese clients with matters involving legal issues in Canada.

Sean has a Ph.D. in physics from the California Institute of Technology in the U.S. and a B.Sc. from Zhejiang University in China. After completing his graduate study, Sean worked as a researcher in the U.S., Italy and Canada. He also worked as a software engineer in Canada for four years prior to practising law, and has been a member of the Canadian Advisory Committee, drafting and reviewing national and international standards in the information technology industry. Sean is fluent in written and spoken Chinese. During law school, he worked in Hong Kong, with the China practice group of a large international law firm, involving various aspects of Chinese law.

Sean is a member of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada (IPIC), the Licensing Executives Society, and the International Federation of Intellectual Property Counsel (FICPI). He also serves on IPIC's Joint Liaison Committee - Patent, IPIC's Industrial Design Committee and IPIC's Licensing Committee.
