Blakes Named "Canada's Law Firm of the Year" for Second Consecutive Year in the Who's Who Legal Awards 2010 Who’s Who Legal lists only the leading practitioners in each field, based exclusively on the findings of an independent six-month research process. Blakes partners received sufficient nominations from their clients and peers to be listed 50 times across 20 practice areas in the publication. Blakes had more practitioners included than any other firm in the country.

For the third consecutive year, Blakes has been named "Law Firm of the Year: Canada" in the PLC Which Lawyer? Awards. Decided exclusively by international in-house counsel, the PLC Which Lawyer? Awards are a coveted prize for law firms. Over 5,500 general counsel were invited to select the winning law firms for the 34 different regional and country awards up for nominations this year. Blakes was the first firm to win the Canadian award in 2008.

Marc-André Landry Awarded the CBA Jules-Deschênes Prize Montréal Associate Marc-André Landry, has been awarded the Jules-Deschênes prize by the Quebec division of the Canadian Bar Association (CBA). This prestigious award recognizes a member who demonstrates exceptional commitment and continuous involvement to the Quebec branch of the CBA. Marc-André is the youngest recipient in the award’s history and is one of the few who is not a judge. Past recipients include: former judge of the Court of Appeal, Madam Justice Mailhot, Mr. Alain Michaud, who this week was appointed a judge of the Superior Court of Quebec in Québec City, the Honourable Pierre C. Gagnon, the Honourable Sophie Bourque and the Honourable Michel A. Caron.
Marc-André has been an integral member of the CBA Quebec branch’s Citizenship and Charters Program. The program helps secondary students draw a connection between the Charters and their rights and obligations as Canadian citizens. The program also helps students develop advocacy skills and gives them an opportunity to interact with lawyers and judges. |

Blakes Named One of "Greater Toronto's Top Employers" for 2010 For the fourth consecutive year, Blakes was named one of "Greater Toronto's Top Employers" by Mediacorp Canada Inc., as featured in the Toronto Star newspaper. Winners of this award were selected from applicants to the national "Canada's Top 100 Employers" competition. Each of the applicants was graded on eight key areas: physical workplace; work atmosphere and social; health, financial and family benefits; vacation and time off; employee communications; performance management; training and skills development; and community involvement. |
Winner of Two Americas M&A Awards for 2009 On December 16, 2009, the Financial Times and mergermarket awarded Blakes the Legal Advisor of the Year Award and, for the second year in a row, the Mid Market Legal Advisor of the Year Canada Award. Anne Stewart Receives Lexpert Zenith Award Anne Stewart, a Partner in our Vancouver office, has been honoured as the recipient of a Lexpert Zenith Award. These awards were established to honour a select group of women lawyers who have made an outstanding contribution to the practice and business of law. As part of the program, the award winners will participate in a newly developed mentor program to share their knowledge and experience with young women lawyers.

Tricia Kuhl Wins the Canadian Bar Association 2009 Young Lawyers Pro Bono Award Tricia Kuhl has been selected as the winner of the Canadian Bar Association (CBA) 2009 Young Lawyers Pro Bono Award for outstanding legal services benefiting the community.
"Tricia personifies what can be done in terms of pro bono" said Sarah Klinger, chair of Young Lawyers-CBA. "She is part of the solution, someone who demonstrates by example through her teaching, mentoring and tutoring. The jury was unanimous in selecting Tricia as this year's award winner."
Tricia was one of the first lawyers to become involved in the Montréal office's pro bono work by assisting the Portage Program for Drug Dependencies. Portage is an organization dedicated to providing programs for youth, new mothers and adults challenged by addiction, with treatment centres across Canada. Tricia provides legal assistance to Portage on corporate, commercial and intellectual property matters, including negotiating and drafting commercial agreements, and providing advice on trade-mark protection and licensing.
The CBA Young Lawyers Pro Bono Award recognizes outstanding pro bono publico (for the public good) legal services to the community by a Canadian lawyer who is younger than 40 years old or who has been in practice for fewer than 10 years. |
Blakes Wins Tax Firm of the Year for Second Straight Year For the second consecutive year, Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP (Blakes), one of Canada’s leading business law firms, was named "Tax Firm of the Year" for Canada at the fourth annual International Tax Review (ITR) Americas Tax Awards, held recently at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. Two Blakes Media Lawyers Win Canadian Association of Journalists President's Award On May 23, 2009, Partners Paul Schabas and Bert Bruser were honoured with the Canadian Association of Journalists (CAJ) President's Award for advocating free speech and access to information. Described, along with other winners, as "unsung heroes of Canadian journalism" by the CAJ, Paul has represented the CAJ, media outlets or media organizations in a series of cases that have redefined journalists' rights, and Bert has provided years of ongoing advice to the CAJ on legal and policy issues.
The President's Award recognizes a significant contribution to Canadian journalism, a distinction that is given only under circumstances of exceptional merit. CAJ is a professional organization with more than 1,300 members across Canada. The CAJ's primary role is to provide public-interest advocacy and quality professional development for its members. |
Paul Schabas Receives Honorary Mention by the Canadian Committee for World Press Freedom On May 5, 2009, Blakes media lawyer Paul Schabas, along with former Blakes partner Brian Rogers, received honorary mention from the jury at a presentation by the Canadian Committee for World Press Freedom. Paul was nominated by the Canadian Newspaper Association for his outstanding work, often without monetary reward, fighting for important principles that help keep the press free and our democratic system healthy. |
Blakes Named One of "Canada's Top 100 Employers" For six consecutive years, Blakes was one of Canada's best employers, as published in Maclean’s newsmagazine. Blakes is the only law firm to receive such a recognition six years in a row. |
Blakes Wins ILO Client Choice Award for Second Year in a Row Established in 2005, the International Law Office Client Choice Awards recognize those law firms around the world that stand apart for the excellent client care they provide and the quality of their service. The criteria for the awards focus on a law firm's ability to add real value to their clients’ business over and above the other players in the market. According to ILO, they received more than 1,500 responses from in-house counsel and, in Canada, Blakes finished well ahead of the rest. |
Canadian National Pro Bono Law Firm Award Blakes has been awarded the Canadian National Pro Bono Law Firm Award at the National Pro Bono Conference in Vancouver. The awards are presented by Pro Bono Law Alberta, Pro Bono Law of British Columbia, Pro Bono Law Ontario and Pro Bono Law Saskatchewan. These awards are a national celebration of the dedication and commitment of the many lawyers who give their time freely to represent those who need but cannot afford legal assistance or qualify for legal aid.
