Ryan's primary focus is on restructuring and insolvency matters. He has been involved in numerous restructuring proceedings under the Companies Creditors' Arrangement Act (CCAA) and the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act(BIA), and has also acted on behalf of court-appointed officers, including receivers, monitors and the trustees.

Ryan appears regularly before the Court of Queen's Bench of Alberta and the Alberta Court of Appeal and has appeared at the Supreme Court of Canada. Ryan has also appeared before the Saskatchewan Court of Queen's Bench.

Ryan also acts on various other commercial litigation issues, including corporate foreclosures and real property and construction disputes.


Representative matters in which Ryan has been involved include:

  • Counsel to ATB Financial in the receivership proceedings of Redwater Energy Corporation, including appearing before the Supreme Court of Canada

  • The lending syndicate in the CCAA proceedings of Endurance Energy Ltd. (oil and gas)

  • The senior secured lender enforcing its security under a US$450,000,000 credit facility against a coal mine in Grande Cache, Alberta (mining)

  • The senior secured lender in the receiverships of COGI Limited Partnership et al. (oil and gas)

  • The court-appointed receivers of Hyperion Exploration Corp., Phenomenome Discoveries Inc. et al. (pharmaceutical), Northern Frontier Corp. et al. (oilfield construction), Waldron Energy Corporation and Exall Energy Corp. (oil and gas)

  • The secured lender for the Walton Vita Crystallina Development in the CCAA proceedings of Walton International Group Inc. (real estate)

  • The first secured lender for the Riverside project in the receivership proceedings of the Reid Built Group of Companies (real estate)

  • As counsel to the administrative agent to the lending syndicate in the receivership proceedings of Spyglass Resources Corp. et al.

  • As Canadian counsel, the lending syndicate in the Canada/U.S. cross-border restructuring proceedings of the Parallel Energy group and Argent Energy group (oil and gas)

  • CPPIB Credit Investments Inc. in connection with a more than C$150-million debt investment in Laricina Energy Ltd., a major Canadian oil sands development and production company (oil sands exploration and production)

  • The debtors in the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act (Canada) (CCAA) proceedings of Bloom Lake General Partner Limited, Quinto Mining Corporation, 8568391 Canada Limited, Cliffs Québec Iron Mining ULC (formerly, Cliffs Québec Iron Mining Limited), Bloom Lake Railway Company Limited and The Bloom Lake Iron Ore Mine Limited Partnership (mining)

  • The debtor in the successful CCAA proceedings of RS Technologies Inc. (manufacturing)

  • Participating in the development and implementation of plans of arrangement and compromise in the CCAA proceedings of Athletes World (retail) and Caribou Resources Corp. (oil and gas)

  • Acting on behalf of AMEC Foster Wheeler in its dispute with Attila Dogan Construction & Installation Co.
