Alex's practice focuses on corporate and commercial transactions, including cross-border mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, corporate reorganizations and general advisory matters. Alex has particular expertise in the oil and gas and renewable energy industries, defence, fintech, private equity, mining, technology and entertainment sectors.

Alex's practice includes negotiating, drafting and analyzing corporate and transactional agreements, drafting opinions on various legal issues, and overseeing large scale due diligence programs.

Alex has previously been on secondment with an oil and gas supermajor and has spent part of his career placed at the Blakes London office, providing him with valuable experience in international business as well as in considering issues from the perspectives of business and in-house legal teams.


Recent representative matters include acting for:

  • Gravity Media Group (portfolio company of TowerBrook Capital) on its acquisition of Proshow Broadcast

  • An international FX and money transfer business and its private equity investors on various Canadian matters

  • A major international company on its US$7-billion joint venture with a state-owned entity for aeronautic defence equipment and a defense equipment fabrication facility

  • Reservoir Minerals on a joint venture with Freeport-McMoRan Exploration Corporation to develop the Timok copper-gold project in Serbia and on an earn-in and joint venture with Rio Tinto in Serbia

  • An international mining company with operations in Africa on the sale of the entirety of its business

  • Imperial Oil on its divesture of 497 Esso-brand retail gas stations to five fuel distributors for C$2.8-billion

  • A major international oil and gas E&P company on its downstream corporate organizational structure

  • Cenovus Energy Inc. on the sale of its wholly owned subsidiary Heritage Royalty Limited Partnership to Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan for C$3.3-billion

  • Freehold Royalties Ltd. in connection with its C$318-million acquisition of royalty production and mineral title lands from Penn West Petroleum Ltd.

  • Encana Corporation and PrairieSky Royalty Ltd. in connection with the transfer of fee-simple oil and gas and related assets by Encana to PrairieSky and subsequent C$1.67-billion initial public offering of PrairieSky by Encana
