James' practice involves all aspects of corporate/commercial litigation with a focus on restructuring and insolvency law and civil enforcement. His related experience includes making applications in the Court of Queen's Bench and the Alberta Court of Appeal, as well as representing clients in both Queen's Bench and Provincial Court trials, pre-trial conferences, negotiations and mediations.

James is involved with the University of Calgary's Student Legal Assistance programs as a Volunteer Lawyer and volunteers with Civil Claims Duty Counsel and the Queen's Bench Amicus Program.

SELECT EXPERIENCE

Some of the cases on the public record in which James has been involved include representing:

  • The debtors, as Canadian counsel, in the multi-jurisdictional (sauvegarde/Chapter11/CCAA) restructuring proceedings of the CGG Group (oil and gas services)

  • The debtors in the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA) proceedings of Lightstream Resources Ltd. in a complex corporate reorganization that ultimately received court approval of a transaction for a total estimated purchase price of C$1.39-billion

  • The lending syndicate, as Canadian counsel, in the cross-border CCAA/Chapter 15 restructuring proceedings of the Sanjel Group, a large private and family-owned oil-field services group of companies, with assets in Canada, the U.S. and the Middle East

  • The agent of a lending syndicate, as Canadian counsel, in the cross-border CCAA/Chapter 11 proceedings of the Quicksilver Resources Canada entities

  • The senior secured lender in the receivership of COGI Limited Partnership

  • The court-appointed receivers of Questfire Energy Corp., Ladacor AMS Ltd., Hyperion Exploration Corp., Ivanhoe Energy Inc., Palliser Oil & Gas Corp., Waldron Energy Corporation, Northern Frontier Group and Eagle Ranch Resources Ltd.
