JP’s practice is focused on all aspects of corporate/commercial litigation, white collar crime, and compliance.

He has select litigation and dispute resolution experience in the areas of oil and gas, energy, construction, insurance, contracts and employment.

JP maintains an active practice in white collar crime. He has assisted in internal fraud and corruption investigations as well as with responses to investigations by external regulators. JP also has select experience with representing individuals against alleged security law violations.

In the area of compliance, JP has extensive experience in advising on and conducting global anti-corruption and fraud risk assessments for multi-billion dollar market cap companies. In addition, he has broad expertise assisting clients with the development, enhancement, implementation and monitoring of compliance programs. JP also advises companies in matters involving Canada’s Extractive Sector Transparency Measures Act and the Integrity Regime. JP further assists with anti-corruption, anti-money laundering and anti-fraud due diligence and related agreements during complex transactions.

Recent matters in which JP has been involved include the following:

Litigation & Dispute Resolution

  • Assisted an electronics company in defending against a shareholder dissent action

  • Assisted a construction company with a claim for breach of contract and builders lien matters

  • Assisted an oil and gas company in defending against a construction/contract damages claim

  • Successfully represented individuals with claims against the Law Society Assurance Fund

  • Represented multiple corporations against former employees with respect to allegations of fraud

  • Assisted in successful insurance mediation involving a large agricultural corporation and a market of insurers

  • Represented a large oil services company in its successful settlement of an insurance claim

  • Assisted a drilling company in connection with Judicial Dispute Resolution and successful settlement of a claim by a former employee for wrongful dismissal

  • Assisted an oil and gas company with its removal of existing directors and shareholders

White Collar Crime and Compliance

  • Assisting in developing, conducting, and reporting on global risk assessments for a number of multi-billion dollar mining companies

  • Assisting in conducting Canadian and international anticorruption and fraud investigations

  • Assisting in the review, development and enhancement of anti-corruption, anti-money laundering and anti-fraud compliance programs (including third party controls) for a number of companies in a variety of industries, including mining, gaming, cosmetics, oil and gas, cannabis and defence

  • Assisting companies with specific matters involving the Extractive Sector Transparency Measures Act and the Integrity Regime

  • Conducting anti-corruption and/or anti-money laundering due diligence in connection with:

    • a proposed multi-billion dollar merger of international companies

    • transactions involving companies in the aeronautics, mining, oil and gas, solar, defence and pipeline industries
