Michael is experienced in a variety of sophisticated corporate, financial and commercial transactions, including project and acquisition financings, private acquisitions, venture capital investments and other sophisticated ad hoc commercial arrangements. He also has significant experience in international investment law, treaties and disputes. Before joining Blakes, he worked in the Middle East, New York and Paris with major New York and London-based international law firms.

Michael's investment law experience includes the analysis of investment law disputes, the assessment and revision of foreign investment laws and regulations and advice on the structuring of foreign investment regulatory functions.

Michael has project financing experience in the power and desalination, oil and gas, and pipeline sectors in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, India and the Philippines. He has also advised on over a dozen acquisition financings, including senior, second lien and mezzanine facilities.

  • Advising the sponsors in connection with the financing of a coal-fired power plant in North Africa

  • Advising a Central Asian national oil company in connection with the development of a gas processing plant, refinery, petrochemicals plant and associated facilities

  • Advising a trans-European pipeline company in connection with a potential financing, including the negotiation of sovereign guarantees

  • Advising a Middle Eastern country in its successful bid to host the first Middle East Formula One Grand Prix Event

  • Advising the European Stability Mechanism in the development of forms of sovereign loan documentation and with respect to European sovereign loan transactions
