Joe advises clients in the technology, life sciences, cannabis and retail industries on commercial, intellectual property, regulatory, privacy and cybersecurity matters.

With respect to privacy, cybersecurity and data protection, Joe advises clients on compliance with Canadian privacy law requirements, data breach management, anti-spam legislation and strategic questions such as big data analytics.

Through his intellectual property practice, Joe has developed extensive experience reviewing and drafting commercial agreements for the licensing, purchase, sale, distribution and marketing of technology. He is also involved in filing trade-mark applications, handling trade-mark oppositions and coordinating international trade-mark filings for clients.

As a member of the Blakes Cannabis group, Joe regularly advises applicants, licensed producers and processors, and major Canadian banks and financial institutions on a variety of regulatory and commercial matters under Canada’s Cannabis Act and Quebec’s Cannabis Regulation Act, including processing, licensing and import/export agreements, supply deals, marketing, financing and board liability.

On the commercial side, Joe assists clients with the drafting of agreements, including shareholder, vendor and equipment manufacturing agreements, term sheets and letters of intent involving private companies. He also conducts intellectual property, privacy and technology due diligence in the context of corporate transactions.

Drawing on his knowledge in microbiology and immunology, Joe also drafts clinical trial and research agreements for pharmaceutical and biotech companies.

Joe is currently completing a master’s degree in information technology law at the Université de Montréal.

He is fluent in French and English and has a working knowledge of Spanish and Arabic.
