Sandy has worked in the financial services sector for over 20 years in various legal, compliance and public policy roles. Her practice focuses on all aspects of regulatory compliance for financial services at both the federal and provincial levels. Sandy provides advice to regulated financial institutions and non-bank institutions. Her areas of expertise include consumer protection legislation, anti-money laundering and anti-terrorism financing legislation, compliance management programs, and regulations related to the payment and card industries.

Sandy has extensive experience dealing with regulators, including the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada and the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada and can assist financial institutions with their dealings with these regulators.

Prior to joining Blakes, Sandy was assistant general counsel at the Canadian Bankers Association. While there, she was a representative for the public/private Advisory Committee on Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing and a member of the Consumer Affairs, Corporate Governance and Financial Crime Working Groups of the International Banking Federation. She has also held senior level positions at various financial institutions in Canada.

Sandy has appeared before numerous parliamentary committees, including with respect to the 2019 federal budget bill, the five-year review of the Proceeds of Crime (Money Laundering) and Terrorist Financing Act and the review on sales practices.

SELECT EXPERIENCE

In her personal capacity, Sandy is a director and the secretary for the Toronto Outdoor Art Fair, a charitable non-profit organization, and the public member for the board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals.
