University of Toronto Wins the Wilson Moot 2016

(TORONTO) March 2, 2016 – The University of Toronto is the overall winner of the Wilson Moot 2016. Team members included Sarah Bittman, Winston Gee, Geetha Philipupillai and Giorgio Traini, who competed successfully against 11 other participating law schools. The preliminary rounds took place in Toronto on February 19 and 20, 2016. The final round between the top two teams from the University of Toronto and Osgoode Hall Law School was held on Saturday afternoon before the Honourable Justice Rosalie Silberman Abella of the Supreme Court of Canada, the Honourable Madam Justice Freda M. Steel of the Manitoba Court of Appeal and the Honourable Justice Harvey M. Groberman of the Court of Appeal of British Columbia.

The prizes for best written argument were awarded to the University of Toronto followed by the University of Ottawa and the University of Victoria.

The top oralist was Adam Cembrowski of the University of Alberta. Andrew Choat of Queen’s University placed second, and Jason Harley of the University of Alberta placed third.

The Wilson Moot was founded in 1992 to honour the outstanding contribution to Canadian law made by the late Honourable Justice Bertha Wilson, the first woman appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada. The Wilson Moot explores legal issues concerning equity-seeking groups, and thereby promotes the education of law students and the legal profession in these areas of pressing concern. This year’s fictional problem focused on issues concerning access to sex-reassignment surgery for transgender people.

The Wilson Moot is a volunteer-driven event. This year, over 100 judges, lawyers and law students generously volunteered their time. Congratulations and thanks are offered to all participants and volunteers who worked to make this year’s Moot a success.
