Application Development Specialist

Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP (Blakes), one of Canada’s largest and most successful law firms, is looking for an experienced professional to join the Information Technology department in the Toronto office as an Application Development Specialist.
The Application Development Specialist position is responsible for planning, analyzing, developing and maintaining firmwide (global) software systems across the Windows desktop, server, Citrix and other platforms.
Primary responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Introducing and integrating new business systems

  • Managing the security, documentation and configuration of the Firm’s technology systems

  • Answering technical queries from peers as requested

  • Escalating, in a timely manner, support issues requiring management’s attention

  • Making recommendations on process improvement

  • Sharing knowledge and expertise by creating training materials and providing hands-on training sessions

  • Performing duties outside of normal business hours as required


  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or equivalent is preferred

  • Minimum of two years of relevant experience in a professional services environment is required

Skills and Abilities

  • Experience in creating reports and dashboards with Microsoft Power BI

  • Experience in creating apps with Microsoft Power Apps

  • Experience in creating workflows with Microsoft Power Automate

  • Expertise in developing and troubleshooting complex SQL queries and other development objects such as stored procedures, views and triggers as required

  • Expertise in SharePoint online

  • Exposure to Power Platform administration is an asset

  • Exposure to developing Web applications using the following is an asset: HTML, .Net, Framework, VS.NET, ASP.NET, ASP, JavaScript/JQuery, XML, CSS, HTML, Ajax

  • Exposure to database development is an asset

  • Ability to provide innovative business solutions that meet Firm business continuity and security standards

  • Ability to work effectively in a team or individually

  • Detail-oriented and willing to provide rigorous unit testing to ensure quality products are delivered
