Library Coordinator

Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP (Blakes), one of Canada’s largest and most successful law firms, is currently looking for a Library Coordinator to join the Knowledge Services department in the Toronto office.
 
Reporting to the Head, Practice Innovation and Change Management, the successful candidate will collaborate with members of the Knowledge Services team nationally. In addition to providing and coordinating library technical services, the successful candidate will deliver current awareness and alerts. With the transition to digital, this role will be responsible for ensuring access to digital resources and supporting training on some of these platforms. The role also involves working with the Practice Innovation team on some projects.
 
This is an excellent opportunity for a new library technician or information professional who is looking to expand their experience in a professional services firm and in various areas within the information and knowledge management space. We are seeking an energetic, self-motivated individual who is a team player, excels under pressure, has a flexible attitude and effectively establishes priorities.
 
Primary responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Managing the physical maintenance of the library in Toronto, including looseleaf filing and circulation duties (arranging books on shelves, coordinating interlibrary loans, assisting lawyers and clients with locating books, and signing books in and out)

  • Processing mail and new materials and entering data acquisitions, orders, records, serials, invoices) into a database management system

  • Assisting with communications with publishers and vendors regarding subscriptions, password management, claims and invoices

  • Providing guidance on technical services for offices outside of Toronto, and working with contractors and team members in other offices

  • Working on enhancement initiatives for the library catalogue and the suite of technical services

  • Providing current awareness though tracking legislative, case law and news alerts using advanced legal, news and business databases

  • Monitoring and responding to requests for the intranet team and making content additions and updates to the intranet

  • In cooperation with members of the Practice Innovation team, coordinating and participating in projects to provide innovative information services and products to support the information needs of the Firm and its clients

  • Assisting with the acquisition and evaluation of new and existing resources

  • Undertaking special projects and other duties as assigned with enthusiasm
     

Qualifications
 
Education/Experience:

  • Library and information technician diploma or equivalent

  • Previous experience conducting ready reference in a law library or professional services firm, and solid experience in the library technical services field

Skills/Abilities:

  • Excellent customer service, organizational and time management skills with the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and capacity to produce a high volume of work in a fast-paced environment

  • Strong business acumen with excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills

  • Sound judgement and troubleshooting skills, ability to work in a high-pressure environment, and can adapt to change

  • Excellent verbal and written skills with attention to detail

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and productively in a team environment with a desire to contribute creative ideas and solutions

  • Strong technical skills with the desire and skill to adapt to emerging technologies to enhance user services

  • Keen interest in driving continuous improvement and reviewing processes to adapt to the changing framework of library services and practices

  • Dependability and flexibility to occasionally work overtime in order to serve our clients on short timelines

  • Ability to be proactive and have a positive attitude with strong interpersonal skills that permit you to work with a variety of stakeholders

  • Ability to lift boxes of books and files up to 35 pounds
