Patent Law Clerk
Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP (Blakes), one of Canada’s largest and most successful law firms, has an opening for a Patent Law Clerk in our Intellectual Property group.
This position is suitable for an individual who has an interest in patents. Responsibilities include filing patent applications and attending to the associated formality requirements throughout prosecution of an application. In this role, the clerk will be responsible for preparing documents for filing with various national patent offices, submitting electronic documents to the Canadian, U.S. and PCT patent offices, preparing instruction letters to foreign counsel, preparing reporting letters to clients and maintaining accurate file records.
A fundamental part of this position is the rigorous monitoring and management of deadlines. The successful candidate will require strong organizational skills and a heightened attention to detail. There will also be frequent contact with clients, and as a result, excellent written and oral communication skills are required.
The candidate must be capable of working in an exacting and high-volume environment, both independently and collaboratively with other firm members and colleagues. It is an expectation that the individual will present in a professional manner and maintain a high level of confidentiality when interfacing with internal and external clients.
- Law clerk diploma from a college or equivalent
- Minimum of three to five years of intellectual property experience
- ILCO designation
- Ability to follow instructions with minimum supervision and thrive in a fast-paced, team environment
- Excellent organizational skills, high attention to detail and the ability to multitask
- Strong time management skills
- Works well in a team and independently
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
