  • Advising financial institutions on transactions involving the sale of vessels

  • Advising product manufacturers and petroleum producers regarding standard terms and conditions for shipping and crewing contracts

  • Acting as trial counsel for a chartered bank in successfully defending a claim for investment losses resulting from the fraud of a third-party company

  • Representing business owners, developers, and landowners before municipal appeal boards and councils, including for Cannabis store development permits, and in litigation with municipalities and the Government of Alberta

  • Acting for applicants and respondents in applications for judicial review from a number of provincial and federal decision-makers

Professional Activities

Ian has acted as pro bono counsel for refugee claimants before the Immigration and Refugee Board and the Federal Court, and is a volunteer with Pro Bono Law Alberta’s Civil Claims Duty Counsel and Queen’s Bench Amicus programs.

Ian is a member of the Canadian Maritime Law Association and sits on the Arctic Issues, Federal Court Rules, Limitation of Liability, and Young Members Committees. Ian is also a member of the Transportation Lawyers Association and the Canadian Bar Association.
