Michael Burke

Awards & Recognition

Over the years, Michael has been recognized by his peers and clients as one of the top securitization, equipment leasing and finance lawyers in Canada. In 2016, he was elected a Fellow of the American College of Commercial Finance Lawyers. For 2015, he was named by Best Lawyers as its 2015 Equipment Finance Law "Lawyer of the Year" in Toronto.

For his extensive work in developing the Leasing Law and Leasing Documentation resource materials for CFLA's Certified Education program, Michael was selected as one of CFLA's "Members of the Year" in 2010.

Professional Activities

Michael regularly writes and speaks at conferences and seminars on securitizations, equipment and consumer leasing, and secured transactions. He has been an adjunct professor of commercial law at Osgoode Hall Law School, a member of the board of directors of Canadian Finance & Leasing Association's (CFLA), has had extensive dealings with governmental officials on behalf of CFLA on a variety of issues and was a member of the Legal Committee of the U.S. Equipment Leasing and Finance Association (ELFA) - the first time that a Canadian lawyer was a member of that committee.

Michael is also involved in a number of industry associations and legal professional organizations in Canada and the United States, including being a member of CFLA's Board of Directors, Chair of the Personal Property Security Law Subcommittee of the Ontario Bar Association, member of CFLA's Legal Committee, former member of the Legal Committee of the U.S. Equipment Leasing and Finance Association, and being member of ELFA's International Subcommittee and other ELFA subcommittees (e.g., dealing with electronic chattel paper).
