About João Victor

Victor is developing a broad corporate commercial litigation and regulatory practice. He has experience assisting clients in a range of legal matters involving complex commercial disputes, international trade controls, sanctions compliance, and corporate conflicts.

Victor has previously assisted in matters before the British Columbia Supreme Court, Canadian International Trade Tribunal, and the British Columbia Securities Commission.

Victor is fluent in Portuguese and is able to converse in Spanish and Mandarin Chinese.

  • Drafted agreements for an international non-profit organization in connection with its operations evacuating refugees from Afghanistan

  • Acted as junior counsel to subsidiaries of Capstone Infrastructure Corporation on anti-dumping proceedings before the Canadian International Trade Tribunal

  • Acted as junior counsel in the enforcement of a Chinese court judgment in Canada

  • Advised a leading international arbitration law firm on the impact of sanctions towards the legal representation of Russian controlled entities

  • Advised a client with respect to Canada’s extradition regime, the role of Interpol, and enforcement by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA)

  • Advised and registered two large corporations in the Controlled Goods Program

  • Advised an American not-for-profit corporation in relation to disputed voting rights on the board of its sister Canadian organization

  • Advised a big four professional services firm on recovering proceeds from a transaction involving an alleged Ponzi scheme

  • Assisted counsel in a judicial review of the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans’ decision to prohibit aquaculture licenses in the Discovery Islands region of British Columbia

  • Assisted counsel on various matters before the British Columbia securities commission including insider trading proceedings

  • Advised various clients on contract interpretation disputes, shareholder disputes, commercial lease disputes, and corporate law conflicts

  • Advised various clients on the Canadian export control, controlled goods, anti-dumping and sanctions regimes
