Ben's clients benefit from his activity within the industry, as well as his involvement with the Calgary oil and gas legal community. He is a past director and the past president of the Canadian Energy Law Foundation (CELF) and has been an active member of CELF's organizing committee for its annual Jasper seminar, whose primary function is the selection of leading-edge papers in oil and gas law for presentation at the Jasper seminar and publication in the Alberta Law Review.

Ben has lectured and instructed courses and seminars on oil and gas law for Insight, the Canadian Association of Petroleum Landmen, and for other industry associations as well as the University of Alberta Faculty of Law.

He is also a past chair of the Canadian Bar Association (Natural Resource Subsection).
