About Randell

Randell practises commercial litigation and dispute resolution. He has represented clients in complex matters with issues spanning a variety of legal disciplines. He primarily assists clients in the areas of professional negligence, insurance coverage, product liability, commercial transactions, corporate governance and remedies, defamation, trusts and estate administration, construction, municipal law and civil enforcement.

Prior to joining Blakes, Randell practised at a nationally ranked advocacy boutique where he ‎gained experience appearing before the Provincial Court of Alberta, the Court of King's Bench of Alberta and the Court of Appeal of Alberta. He also has familiarity with proceedings before the Municipal Government Board and a background in civil service with tenures at Alberta's Ministry of Energy and the Embassy of Canada in Washington, D.C.

Select Experience

Representative matters in which Randell has been involved include:

  • Defending registered professionals from claims in a variety of contexts, but often involving projects or transactions in the energy and construction industries

  • Acting as co-counsel to a professional regulator in defence of a broad array of claims, and successfully applying to have all claims struck

  • Advising insurers on coverage issues, including the resolution of coverage disputes between insurance layers

  • Representing a component part manufacturer in a complex, multi-party product liability claim

  • Prosecuting a claim concerning the sale of significant oil and gas assets, with aspects of oppression, theft of corporate opportunity and civil conspiracy

  • Advising general and limited partners in relation to competing interpretations of partnership agreements

  • Successfully asserting beneficiaries' entitlements in estate disputes

  • Acting for construction clients in bringing and defending builders' liens and Public Works Act claims

  • Representing corporate landlords to secure performance of commercial leases

  • Successfully enforcing international and domestic judgments against assets located in Alberta
