About Robert

Robert is a specialist in intellectual property (IP), information technology (IT), privacy and cybersecurity law.

In his commercial practice, Robert assists technology vendors and enterprise customers with technology-related agreements. His expertise encompasses a wide range of areas, including IT and business process outsourcing, payments, cloud computing (including SaaS and IaaS), and software and technology licensing. He also provides guidance on related regulatory and contractual compliance, including managing software licence compliance audits and helping financial services organizations meet outsourcing requirements.

Robert's transactional practice focuses on the IT and IP aspects of mergers and acquisitions, which includes performing related due diligence and negotiating transition services agreements. With respect to IP, Robert's experience includes protecting and enforcing IP rights (patents, trademarks, designs and copyrighted works) with a particular focus on computer-implemented, virtual reality and artificial-intelligence-related inventions, and assisting with IP clearance and infringement opinions.

Robert is a certified information privacy professional and possesses a broad understanding of privacy laws. He assists clients with various privacy matters, including responding to cybersecurity incidents, negotiating privacy terms of agreements, drafting privacy policies and complying with Canada's anti-spam legislation and other data protection laws.

Robert also supports clients with aspects of corporate governance and risk management relevant to his practice areas.

Prior to joining Blakes, Robert worked at a major Canadian pension fund, as well as prominent IP boutiques in Toronto.

Robert is recognized in Best Lawyers: Ones to Watch in Canada 2023 in the area of Intellectual Property Law.

Professional Activities

Robert routinely speaks at industry events on topics relating to technology, cybersecurity and privacy law.

He is actively involved in the IT and IP legal communities and currently serves on the planning committees of several industry organizations. Additionally, he dedicates his time to a Toronto children's charity, for which he serves as a board member.
