About Marita

Marita has a broad corporate and commercial litigation and dispute resolution practice. She has experience in a wide range of areas, including contractual disputes, construction, insurance, energy, and intellectual property. Marita has also advised clients on matters relating to acquisitions and corporate compliance.

During law school, Marita obtained experience by volunteering at the Pro Bono program at the Ontario Superior Court of Justice as well as at a legal clinic for women who have experienced violence. She was elected valedictorian of her graduating class.

Select Experience

Representative matters in which Marita has been involved include:

  • Successfully representing Suncor Energy Inc. in a judicial review application in the Court of King's Bench of Alberta involving the calculation of oil sands royalties

  • Successfully representing an insured to obtain a C$362-million award in a private arbitration against its insurer pursuant to a political risk insurance policy

  • Representing and advising a major oil and gas company on breach of contract and negligence claims in connection with a pipeline construction agreement

  • Assisting a regulator with an investigation relating to alleged bribery of public officials and insider trading

  • Successfully representing a large energy services company in a five-week intellectual property trial in the Federal Court of Canada, involving both patent infringement and patent validity issues (Packers Plus Energy Services Inc. v. Essential Energy Services Ltd.)

  • Representing and advising a large natural gas company in relation to a copyright dispute

  • Advising insurer-side parties on coverage disputes involving exclusions and liability coverage

  • Defending major banks against allegations of negligence, breach of contract, and breach of trust

  • Acting for a major energy company in relation to a C$2.8-billion sale of assets

Professional Activities

Marita is a member of the Law Society of Alberta, the Canadian Bar Association and the Calgary Bar Association.

Marita volunteers with the Civil Claims Duty Counsel Program and the King's Bench Amicus Program, where she provides pro bono legal advice to unrepresented litigants.

Marita also volunteers with the Trans ID Clinic in Calgary, which provides pro bono legal services to assist trans individuals in updating their name and gender markers on government-issued identification.
