Recognized as a Leader in Diversity and Inclusion for Ninth Time

February 28, 2019

We are pleased to announce that Blakes has been named one of Canada’s Best Diversity Employers by Mediacorp Canada Inc. for the ninth time. We are proud to receive this honour once again and to stand with other leading Canadian organizations on the list.

According to Mediacorp, “Through a variety of innovative and progressive initiatives, these wining employers have each made huge strides toward creating a more inclusive and respectful workplace. That means providing the kind of environment where employees feel welcome and free to be themselves at work, regardless of race, gender, country of origin or sexual orientation. It means accommodating those with disabilities, including invisible ones such as mental-health issues, so that people get the support they need to succeed at their jobs.”

“Blakes is committed to championing diversity and inclusion, because it makes us better,” said Brock Gibson, Chair of Blakes. “I am proud of the work that we’ve done, and we are determined to continue moving the needle. Diversity strengthens our business and helps us bring unique perspectives to the table.”

Canada’s Best Diversity Employers has been published annually for the past 12 years. Winners are selected based on submissions to the annual Canada’s Top 100 Employers. The survey takes into account employers’ workplace inclusivity from five diverse groups: women; visible minorities; persons with disabilities; Aboriginal Peoples; and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) peoples.

The winners were announced in a special magazine published in The Globe and Mail.

In addition to sustaining our ongoing diversity and inclusion initiatives, Blakes continues to focus on creating gender balance and empowering women in the workplace. In 2018, Blakes became one of 20 organizations, and the only Canadian law firm, in Global Compact Network Canada’s Gender Equality Leadership in the Canadian Private Sector initiative. The program provides Canadian companies with a blueprint on how to achieve better gender balance. We also introduced a new initiative called Stepping Beyond: Future Opportunities, geared towards women general counsel who want to expand or step beyond their role as general counsel.
