Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP (Blakes) sponsored Canada’s largest legal tech hackathon in Toronto last weekend (June 2-4).
A hackathon is an event in which teams of people collaborate over a short period of time on a software project. The Legal Tech Hackathon, hosted by technology event organizers North of 41, invited 290 computer programmers, lawyers, software designers and data analysts to find innovative software solutions to real-world challenges in the legal profession.
The assembled professionals divided into 25 teams and, in the space of 48 hours, competed to create technology solutions to improve efficiency for the delivery of legal services.
Simon Wormwell, Blakes Director of Knowledge & Research Services, was on the panel of judges that determined the winner.
“It’s our responsibility to our clients to be aware of innovations in legal technology, so we can ensure we are providing the best possible services for their needs,” said Simon.
“The great participation in the Legal Tech Hackathon showed the level of interest there is in this area. Initiatives such as this, and the Blakes Global Legal Innovation Challenge, are showing just how exciting this space is right now in Canada and worldwide.”
The winner of the Legal Tech Hackathon was Case Val, a proposed online platform evaluating personal injury claims. Case Val will now work with select partners on developing and commercializing their idea.
