We are mourning the loss of our dear friend and colleague Lindsay Rowell. Lindsay passed away peacefully in hospice on May 26, 2026, surrounded by her family, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Lindsay was a talented litigator whose smarts, creativity and hard work impressed and inspired everyone who had the good fortune to know her. These qualities made her a trusted advocate for our clients, and she was well known for her kindness and generosity. She took a deep interest in the people around her — a care that found its greatest expression in her roles as a mother, wife, daughter, sister and friend.
Lindsay joined Blakes as an Associate in our Calgary office in 2014 and became a Partner in 2022. She built a successful commercial litigation and arbitration practice, representing clients in complex construction, infrastructure and energy disputes. She argued before all levels of court — in Alberta, in Ontario and at the Supreme Court of Canada — and regularly represented clients in both international and domestic commercial arbitrations.
In addition to her client work, Lindsay was a dedicated and caring mentor and a co-chair of the Calgary Student Committee. Her engagement in the legal community extended to elected roles within several professional associations, frequent contributions to Arbitration Matters, and an instructorship at the University of Calgary Faculty of Law. Lindsay had a quiet humility and an unflappability that made her a great role model, leader and teammate.
Blakes extends our deepest sympathies to Lindsay’s family: her husband, Matt, and her children, Nora and Archer.
To honour Lindsay, Blakes has established a new National Mentorship Award in her name, one for a partner and one for an associate. The Firm will donate to a charity selected by each recipient of the award. The first partner award will be given to Lindsay posthumously.
This July, Team Blakes will be riding in honour and memory of Lindsay and all those we’ve lost to cancer as part of the Tour Alberta for Cancer fundraiser, a cycling event supporting the Alberta Cancer Foundation. Donations can be made here.
