Litigation Legal Assistant/Law Clerk (18-Month Contract)

Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP (Blakes), one of Canada’s largest and most successful law firms, is currently looking for a Legal Assistant/Law Clerk to join the Litigation practice group in the Toronto office. This position is an 18-month contract.

Primary responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

Partner Support (60%)

  • Formatting documents
  • Running blacklines
  • Helping to prepare and finalize pleadings
  • Serving and filing pleadings with various courts and various levels of court
  • Saving and filing documents with DM, Share Drives, Share Files
  • Updating calendar with appointments ex: court, CPD, etc.
  • Assisting with printing and couriers
  • Preparing monthly accounts
  • Uploading invoices, expenses, etc. to Chrome River
  • Registration for CPD and business development programs
  • Book travel (hotels, flights)
  • Renew memberships as requested

Associate Support (10%)

  • E-filing inbox and sent folders into the e-file folders
  • Formatting documents
  • Running Blacklines
  • Helping to prepare mediation and arbitration materials (ex: mediation briefs, briefs of documents)
  • Helping to prepare and finalize pleadings
  • Serving and filing pleadings with various courts and various levels of court
  • Saving and filing documents with DM, Share Drives, Share Files
  • Updating calendar with appointments ex: court, CPD, etc.
  • Assisting with printing and couriers
  • Uploading invoices, expenses, etc. to Chrome River
  • Registration for CPD and business development programs
  • Renew memberships as requested
  • Edit docket entries in CMS if requested

 Clerk/Billable Tasks (30%)

  • Compiling affidavits of documents
  • Communicating with clients to obtain file materials
  • Reviewing files and preparing them for production
  • Preparing file summaries
  • Attending hearings
  • Taking notes at hearings and collecting exhibits
  • Compiling exhibits and producing to parties and court reporter for transcript
  • Managing and tracking large data files
  • Being cross-examined on clerk affidavits
  • Commissioning affidavits
  • Organizing the Wilson Moot Event
  • Being key contact to review, manage, and organize matter

 Qualifications

Education/Experience:

  • Legal Assistant or Law Clerk diploma or equivalent is required
  • Minimum of two years of litigation experience is preferred

 Skills/Abilities:

  • Experience with serving and filing documents
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills 
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Strong ability to handle multiple tasks and projects and meet deadlines
  • Strong technical proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint) is required
