How We Live Our Values

We are committed to building a more inclusive Firm and legal profession, through our community outreach, recruitment and many internal and external initiatives. These are important investments in our people and the communities in which we live and work.

Our dedication to fostering an inclusive workplace also benefits our clients. Diverse teams generate innovative solutions that help our clients succeed.

We are at our best — for our clients and for each other — when we bring our whole selves to work. We share below stories of our values-in-action at Blakes.

Blakes Voices... Our Stories

Kyle Elliott

My passion for championing diversity and inclusion comes from knowing first-hand the barriers that people from underrepresented groups face when paving out a career in law. At Blakes, we’re committed to doing the long-term work to build a more diverse and inclusive workplace and profession, and work with leading organizations across Canada to not only empower our people in their daily working lives, but also promote these values more broadly in our communities.

Christine Milliken

The Firm’s commitment to fostering a caring, respectful and supportive workplace community was evident to me from the start. The women’s programs at Blakes go beyond mentorship; we’re actively championing and promoting women leaders; we coach and help one another succeed at every stage in our careers, from articling students starting out, to women returning to the workforce after a break from their careers, and senior partners who are leaders in the industry.

Michael Howcroft

The Blakes culture fosters and encourages a plurality of voices and experiences. Equity is a foundational value here. We are recognized not just for what we achieve but also for who we are. Blakes stands out for that and I think it helps people reach their highest potential.

Aldona Gudas

Like many lawyers, I was attracted to the legal profession because we can contribute to making progress towards greater justice, inclusion and equality. There is a real commitment at Blakes to reflect and live those values in the workplace. Blakes has long taken concrete steps to support an inclusive work culture and profession. We celebrate diversity while recognizing that, as a profession, we’re a work-in-progress. I am proud to work at a Firm that is dedicated to leading that progress.

Linc Rogers

Inclusion means acknowledging and leveraging our differences rather than pretending they are imperceptible. It’s important to me that at Blakes I am seen, heard and recognized for the totality of who I am and the entirety of my contributions. I am excited about being a member of Black@Blakes – a vibrant and evolving initiative to help recruit, retain and advance Black legal professionals at Blakes with the enthusiastic support of our friends, colleagues and clients.
