About Andrew

Andrew has a broad civil litigation and dispute resolution practice with a focus on complex corporate and commercial matters. He has experience assisting clients in both domestic and international arbitration, contractual disputes, construction litigation, class actions, and real estate disputes. Andrew represents clients across a wide range of industries, including mining, construction, banking and pharmaceuticals. His practice also includes providing pro bono legal services, particularly to not-for-profit organizations.

Andrew has appeared as counsel at all levels of court in British Columbia, as well as before domestic and international arbitral tribunals. Andrew joined Blakes as a summer student in 2016. He then completed a one year clerkship for six justices of the Supreme Court of British Columbia before returning to the Firm and finishing his articles.

Select Experience

Andrew's recent experience includes acting as counsel to:

  • An owner in defending a C$500-million ICC arbitration claim regarding construction of energy infrastructure, including defending an ICC Emergency Measures Application

  • A luxury hotel group in ad hoc international arbitration involving disputes under a hotel management agreement

  • Lyft, in defeating an injunction application which would have prohibited Lyft from operating in British Columbia, and defeating the subsequent application for judicial review of Lyft's passenger transportation licence

  • The Silver Star Resort Association, in defeating a judicial review application that challenged the existence of the Association, which had been created by ministerial order

  • An LCIA arbitration between Canadian, Bermudian and Czech entities involving dispute over the sale of mining assets in Mongolia

  • The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators as intervenors before the Supreme Court of Canada in Uber v. Heller

  • Carillion Canada with respect to claims relating to the construction of a high-voltage transmission line in the context of its CCAA restructuring

Professional Activities

Andrew is a member of the Canadian Bar Association, the Vancouver Bar Association and The Advocates' Society. He also regularly provides pro bono legal services through Access Pro Bono.
