About Nicole

Nicole's practice focuses on energy regulation, as well as environmental and administrative law. Nicole has experience in a broad range of regulatory and litigation matters including reviewing and applying for regulatory and environmental approvals, regulatory compliance issues, public consultation matters, corporate matters, and surface land rights acquisition and compensation.

Nicole has assisted clients in matters before the Canada Energy Regulator, Alberta Energy Regulator, Alberta Utilities Commission, Alberta Surface Rights Board, British Columbia Utilities Commission, British Columbia Oil and Gas Appeals Tribunal and British Columbia Surface Rights Board.

  • Representing EDP Renewables Canada Ltd. in its application to the Alberta Utilities Commission to construct and operate the 300 MW Sharp Hills wind farm

  • Representing Pattern Energy in its application to the Alberta Utilities Commission to construct and operate the 280 MW Lanfine wind power project located near Oyen, Alberta

  • Assisting Enel Alberta Wind Inc. with its applications and amendment applications to the Alberta Utilities Commission on the 115 MW Riverview Wind Project and 30.6 MW Castle Rock Ridge Phase 2 Project located near Pincher Creek, Alberta

  • Assisting the Canadian Solar Industries Association in an Alberta Utilities Commission proceeding regarding the AESO's provisional rules to implement and operate the proposed Alberta Capacity Market

  • Assisting BluEarth Renewables Inc. with regard to its complaint to the Alberta Utilities Commission in relation to the conduct of Fortis Alberta Inc. and tariff compliance matters

  • Assisting Public Sector Pension Investment Board and the Alberta Teachers' Retirement Fund Board with regard to their proposed C$1.7-billion acquisition of AltaGas Canada Inc.

  • Representing a renewable energy company in noise-related condition compliance proceedings before the Alberta Utilities Commission

  • Part of the legal team representing E.ON Climate & Renewables Canada Ltd. in its application to the Alberta Utilities Commission for approval of a 120 MW wind power project and associated infrastructure

  • Advising various companies with respect to statements of concern and regulatory appeals before the Alberta Energy Regulator

  • Advising pipeline companies on various issues in connection with Canada Energy Regulator applications to construct and operate pipelines, including engineering, environmental and stakeholder consultation matters

  • Advising various companies on regulatory and environmental due diligence reviews associated with mergers and acquisitions

  • Advising a natural gas shipper in its intervention before the National Energy Board in support of a pipeline expansion and associated tolling relief

  • Advising and representing a natural gas developer operating in northeast British Columbia in matters before the British Columbia Oil & Gas Appeal Tribunal and the British Columbia Surface Rights Board

  • Assisting in representing parties in applications to the British Columbia Utilities Commission seeking approval of various corporate transactions

  • Assisting in representing a refinery operator in proceedings before Environmental Protection Review Canada

Professional Activities

Nicole is a member of the Law Society of Alberta, the Canadian Bar Association, and the Calgary Bar Association, and is involved with the Women at Blakes Network.
