About Emily

Emily's practice is focused on the defence of class actions, principally in the areas of product liability, negligence, contract and consumer protection. A member of the Ontario and Quebec bars, she has expertise litigating a range of complex commercial disputes. Emily advises national and foreign clients across numerous industries, including manufacturers of medical devices, pharmaceuticals, automobiles and consumer products, as well as financial institutions.

Emily also regularly advises on a wide variety of regulatory regimes, including consumer protection compliance and product warnings.

Much of her litigation experience has been developed through large, document-intensive cases involving complex financial, technical, scientific and medical matters, often with a cross-border or multi-jurisdictional focus.

Emily is fluent in English and French.

Select Experience

Recent representative matters include:

  • Defending various multinational pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers in class actions involving a wide variety of medicines and devices

  • Defending multinational manufacturers, including automobile manufacturers, in consumer protection and product liability class actions

  • Defending a technology company against a consumer protection class action

  • Representing an insurer in class actions across the country relating to business interruption claims in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic

  • Acting as counsel to the court-appointed monitor in the insolvency proceedings of JTI-Macdonald Corp., involving over C$600-billion of litigation claims asserted against the tobacco industry

  • Defending a technology and power transmission company in a large arbitration arising from a dispute relating to the construction of converter stations

  • Acting as part of a team that successfully defended a franchisor against a multimillion-dollar claim by its franchisees

  • Acting on behalf of Bloom Lake General Partner Limited and various affiliates owning one of the largest iron ore mines in Canada, in the context of proceedings filed under the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act
