About Heather

Heather's litigation practice involves all aspects of corporate/commercial litigation with an emphasis on environmental law, oil & gas law, construction law, regulatory law, and First Nations law. She regularly appears before the Alberta Court of Queen's Bench, and has authored submissions for various Courts and regulatory bodies including the Federal Court of Appeal and the Alberta Surface Rights Board. She has also participated in various alternative dispute resolution processes, including Judicial Dispute Resolutions.

Prior to joining Blakes, Heather clerked for the Honourable Madam Justice Rowbotham of the Alberta Court of Appeal.

Select Experience
  • Acting on behalf of a large natural gas company in a $35M dispute involving seismic data

  • Acting on behalf of a large general contractor in respect of various liens and lawsuits by several sub-contractors

  • Representing a transmission line operator in an appeal involving Constitutional and land valuation issues

  • Acting on behalf of a commercial property owner in relation to quasi-criminal charges resulting from a hazardous substance release

  • Acting on behalf of a First Nation in regards to a royalty dispute with the Government of Canada

  • Representing directors in Provincial Court in relation to a claim involving personal liability in tort

  • Advising domestic and international clients on regulatory and environmental issues relating to natural resource development (i.e., coal, liquefied natural gas) and renewable energy development (i.e., wind)

  • Advising a client on First Nations' claims to traditional marine territory

  • Conducting environmental due diligence reviews for securities financings involving petroleum & natural gas companies

  • Advising an international client on Alberta's interconnected electric system

  • Acting for several insurers in settlement negotiations relating to personal injury matters

Professional Activities

Heather is a member of the Canadian Bar Association and the Calgary Bar Association. She also sits on the executive for the Canadian Bar Association - Alberta (South) Environmental Law Section.

Heather volunteers as civil duty counsel at the Provincial Court of Alberta, where she provides pro bono legal advice to unrepresented litigants. She is also a Big Sister with Big Brothers, Big Sisters (Calgary).
