About Allan

Allan's practice focuses on commercial financing, including secured and unsecured debt financing, project financing, acquisition financing, asset-based lending, cross-border financing and transactional work.  Allan also has experience with project development, and has advised a broad range of clients in the electrical power, natural resources, renewable energy, technology, agriculture and infrastructure sectors.

He regularly acts for lenders and borrowers in connection with syndicated and non-syndicated bank loan facilities and advises on hedging arrangements, equity financings and investments, acquisitions, intercreditor arrangements, reorganizations, divestitures and environmental, social and governance issues. He has experience with front-end project structuring and development matters, including joint venturing, partnerships, procurement, real property, construction, commodities purchasing, carbon offsetting and commercial issues.

Prior to joining Blakes, Allan worked as an associate at another national law firm.

  • An energy company in financing matters relating to a C$1.8-billion joint venture

  • An energy company in financing matters relating to its restructuring transaction under the CCAA

  • A Crown corporation in its C$407.5-million loan to create additional irrigable acres in Alberta

  • An energy company in relation to its $250-million revolving and project-based credit facilities

  • A renewable energy developer in the development of Travers Solar – Canada's largest operating solar energy project

  • Renewable energy developers in the development, contracting and financing of more than 2 GW of wind, solar and battery storage projects

  • The generators and power purchasers of several wind, solar and battery storage projects in the negotiation and administration of power purchase agreements

  • The developers, borrowers and equity investors in several gas-fired cogeneration projects

  • The lenders in connection with syndicated construction and convertible loan facilities in an aggregate amount of C$97-million

  • The owner of a liquefied natural gas facility in connection with the negotiation of gas supply agreements

  • A REIT in its acquisition of a four-property industrial portfolio

  • The purchaser in its acquisition and financing of a 32 MW cogeneration facility

Professional Activities

Allan is a member of the Law Society of Alberta, the Calgary Bar Association and the Canadian Bar Association. He previously acted as a lawyer supervisor for Pro Bono Students Canada.
