About J.A.

J.A. joined the Firm in 1982 and practised first in the Firm's Litigation group and then for almost 20 years as the Firm's Research Partner. J.A. continues to provide advice and assistance in a wide array of areas, including the law of trusts, corporate law, partnership law, conflict of laws, statutory and contractual interpretation, and constitutional law.

Select Experience

J.A. has litigated some of the leading cases in Ontario relating to pension and trust matters including:

  • MacDougall v Ontario Northland Transportation Commission in which attempts to certify a significant pension class action was defeated

  • Aegon Canada Inc. v. ING Canada Inc to successfully enforce indemnity under pension related representations and warranties in a Share Purchase Agreement

  • Lennon v. Superintendent of Financial Services to successfully defend challenge by plan members to asset transfer between pension plans

  • Martin v. Barrett et al., to defend class action against plan custodian related to underfunding of a multi-employer pension plan

  • McMaster University v. Robb, Reichhold Limited v. Wong Reichhold Limited v. Boyer Paramount Pictures (Canada) Inc. v Dillon to obtain court approval of surplus distributions to plan sponsors

J.A. is recognized as a leading lawyer in The Best Lawyers in Canada 2022 (Employee Benefits Law).

Professional Activities

In 1989/90, J.A. was appointed assistant counsel to the Commission of Inquiry to the Relationship between Certain Individuals and Corporations and Elected and Unelected Public Officials, which was an Ontario judicial inquiry headed by The Honourable Mr. Justice Lloyd Houlden.
