About Patrick

Patrick maintains a diverse litigation and dispute resolution practice, with an emphasis on complex commercial litigation and public law matters. Patrick has appeared as counsel before all levels of court in British Columbia. He has also acted as counsel on matters before the Federal Court, Federal Court of Appeal, courts in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Yukon, and various arbitral and administrative tribunals.

Patrick joined Blakes as a summer student in 2018 and completed his articles with the Firm in 2021. Prior to his articles, he clerked for seven justices of the Supreme Court of British Columbia, including the Chief Justice.

Complex Commercial Disputes

  • Trial counsel to a global marketing, logistics and distribution company defending claims of breach of contract and breach of fiduciary duty in a dispute involving the international delivery of chemical elements

  • Appellate counsel to the purchaser in successful appeal overturning a summary trial decision in a residential real estate dispute

  • Trial and appellate counsel to a real estate investment and management firm in proceedings concerning the ownership of commercial and residential properties

  • Class action counsel for an active pharmaceutical ingredient supplier in a proposed national class proceeding 

  • Arbitration counsel to a climate tech company in an international arbitration involving claims of breach of contract and breach of good faith duties

  • Counsel to a publicly traded railway company in actions involving claims of negligence

  • Counsel to a hospitality company in a commercial tenancy dispute

Administrative and Public Law

  • Counsel to a salmon aquaculture company in various proceedings, including a Federal Court judicial review which overturned the Minister of Fisheries' decision to end aquaculture in a region of coastal British Columbia

  • Counsel to the Federation of Law Societies of Canada in its successful application for an injunction exempting legal professionals from requirements to report on their clients under the Income Tax Act, which the Federation is challenging as unconstitutional

  • Counsel to a forestry company in regulatory proceedings under provincial forest legislation

  • Counsel to an individual respondent in a judicial review of a BC Human Rights Tribunal decision

Professional Activities

Patrick is a member of the Law Society of British Columbia, the Canadian Bar Association, the Vancouver Bar Association and The Advocates' Society. He also regularly provides pro bono legal services through Access Pro Bono.
