Builders’ Lien Seminar Series - Part 2

Calgary, June 8, 2022 - 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM

Please note that this program will be delivered in English.

Construction projects come with a host of challenges, but none are more prevalent than builders' liens. From preservation and enforcement to lien removal, navigating Alberta's builders' lien legislation can at times seem like an archaic process. Still, knowledge of this legislation can provide meaningful assistance to development and construction industry participants.

We invite you to join the Blakes Calgary Construction Dispute Resolution group for a two-part webinar series where we will provide a comprehensive overview of Alberta's builders' lien legislation, including the amendments made by Alberta's new prompt payment legislation.

Over the course of the series, we will also provide practical guidance and tips for both owners and contractors when dealing with builders' liens on construction projects.

Topics:

  • Builders' Lien Basics (June 6, 2022): This presentation will discuss the common issues arising in the builders' lien process, including the creation of a lien, categories of liens and how best to enforce or defend against lien claims. This presentation is directed at participants who may be unfamiliar with builders' liens or need a refresher.

  • Drafting to Address the New Builders' Lien Legislation (June 8, 2022): In this presentation, we will take a deep dive into the recent amendments to Alberta's builders' lien legislation and the accompanying regulations. We will also explore some of the key contractual terms that can be used in construction contracts to address this legislation with reference to CCDC2-2020 and other standard form construction contracts. This presentation is directed at participants who are revising their construction contracts to align with the new legislation.
